What a lovely town. We travel a lot, mostly abroad, but for me our last trip was so miserable, staying close to home sounds good and we would love the atmosphere of Leavenworth, I'll google it.

What a nice job Terri! You will really enjoy taking classes. Leavenworth is a Bavarian town here in Washington and all the buildings are painted up. It's so pretty and in the summer with all the hanging flower baskets it's stunning!

Really beautiful. I found Decorative Art Class near me and will try it on 3/13. The first project is poppies, but not the red one, more like CA wild poppies, but I can always change the colors. Here is a sample of my work, but you can see it needs shadowing and I need to learn how to use my brushes. I really enjoy the time I spend painting.

It's not my work, I got them off the internet for quick reference, but yes, the first blue plate is the style I paint in.

Sheri, you are a wealth of excellent information. The photos below are beautiful. Do the first three represent your work? Have to dash off to a meeting, and will follow-up later.

Hello Terri, I am a professional decorative painter speciallizing in Rogaland Rosemaling & a faux finisher. My Mother was a decorative painter in Rogaland Rosemaling (Norwegian Rose Painting). There are 3 types of rosemaling, Telemark, Hallingdal & Rogaland. These represent 3 areas of Norway and like a common language in a country, it can differ from region to region, such is Rosemaling.

Rosemalling is traditionally done in oil paints because of the time consumed in the painting and blending of colors. It requires more time so the paints cannot dry out fast, oils allow this time. I think a new painter should try this method first because your not racing dry-out. You can relax and I believe, learn how to paint.
Tole painting began in 18th century New England by German immigrants in Pennsylvania. I do believe they admired the work of Noregian painters and wook carvers but I believe they were also influnced heavely by their neighbors the Russian Folk painters. The site you provided "Pampered Palette" is Tole painting. Donna Dewberry is also a Tole painter and this style is looped into being called "Decorative Painting". This style is usually done in Acrylic paints, though many painters apply extenders to their paints to slow down the drying. In the early days this was not possible. So the strokes were short and very sweet.

Many "Tole" painters are influnced by the depth & details of Rosemaling and over the years it shows up more & more in Tole paintings. Take some classes, you'll love it! A little story: Years ago I was commissioned to paint an entry door on the house of a Russian/German immigrant here in Washington. His sister saw it and fell in love with it. She took painting classes and over the years became interested in other painting styles. She is now a local watercolorist and her works are being sold in local galleries! It all starts with a seed or in my case, I may be an Oak tree but I'm still a nut! Cheers!

Sheri, as always, great additions. On a different note, do you know anything about Decorative Art? Think I will take some classes. There is an interesting website - Pampered Palette. Also, take a look at Folk Art on Facebook, this one woman, Lin, does beautiful work, especially red poppies on a black background.
