Lana, where are you located?

I think the geranium suggestion is the most favored for your situation. however depending on exactly where you are gardening, the Mexican heather is a good one. Up here in VT it wouldn't survive one winter. Best to say where you are gardening. Vinca minor is good if you can keep it confined. Another thing--even greenery can be the answer--Japanese painted fern, small blue hostas?

Thanks Marvin. Lana, if your birdbaths are in a semi-shady moist area forget-me-nots provide us a lot of color off and on throughout the growing season.

Willis.....We refer to our time line now as Pre-Katrina and Post Katrina. Pre Katrina was a pristine time of beautiful landescapes, beaches, and true Southern "laid-back" people. Post Katrina, what can I say??? The beach was devastated. The eary(sp?) thing that stuck in my mind is of how every plant and tree that was left was brown (no green) for about 1 1/2 years after. Some of the old stately mansions survived, but most were destroyed- all the way to the slab. The 30 foot storm surge (big wave of water) is what got us, not the wind.
Post Katrina- life is slowly coming back, Hwy 90 along the beach, and the beaches have been repaired. Some folks are building back, but a lot left. It took 30 years to recover from Camile and it will take at least that long for recovrey from Katrina. For me, I moved away from the beach!

Reference Lana MacKay looking for perennial under bird bath. Try Mexican Heather. It has pretty, small, and blue blooms most of the season. Only about 18 inches in height, and a spread of about two feet. It will fit nicely under your bird bath. Propagates easily by layering....Poppy

I have a hardy geranium that starts blooming in June and goes to frost. The variety I like best is Rozanne, a rich blue.

Need a ground covering perennial flower for under my birdbaths. I'm putting a scalloped tree circle around the base and I want to fill it with something that blooms most the season. Any ideas?

Funny. I have lots of deer around my house and they never, ever eat anything from the garden or flower beds. Hanging soap in the fruit trees and blueberry bushes seems to work to keep them away from those. I guess they just have enough to eat in the meadows and woods that they don't bother.

We're run over with deer...they don't eat our Iris (Japanese & German), nor our Agapanthus. They leave the Coneflowers alone as the season wears on, but they nibble on them when they're young & tender. They also don't bother our Vitex (Chaste tree)...all of these are very floriferous.

If the deer are hungry enough, they will eat almost anything except daffodils. It only helps if you have a city feeding program to feed the hungry deer. Then you will still get a few. Depends on the weather.
